Thanks to David Levy of Scripps College for making me aware of this website developed by the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions. The home page has five edgy 1-2 minute videos (full film is also available) with titles such as:
- Now is the New Later
- Project Yourself
- Saving is Money
- How Debt Slaps You
- Vital Info
Think of it as a sort of "Scared Straight for Student Loans." As an example, the home page describes some of the consequences of debt:
YOUR DEBT COULD PREVENT OR DELAY YOU FROM:
- Finishing college;
- Choosing a profession you love (Hello, soul sucking job);
- Getting a job (employers can check your credit);
- Moving out on your own (Hi, Mom and Dad);
- Renting your own place (Landlords check your credit);
- Taking out future loans (Banks check your credit);
- Buying a house;
- Getting married (Your future spouse won't want your bad credit score tainting theirs).
This may be a useful video to provide some perspective and basic financial literacy concepts about student loans and credit cards to incoming students.
